Canada Sanctions Five Iranian Officials Over Hormuz Strait Blockade

The Government of Canada imposed sanctions on five Iranian officials on August 14, 2026, for their roles in blockading the Strait of Hormuz. The measures, enacted under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations, freeze Canadian assets and prohibit Canadians from dealing with the targeted individuals. The sanctioned group includes a senior official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a naval commander, the head of Iran's foreign policy and national security committee, and the chair of the Iranian energy exporters union.

These sanctions follow a blockade initiated by Iran after the United States and Israel launched joint strikes against the country on February 28. The resulting obstruction of the critical waterway caused significant disruptions in global energy markets, leaving approximately 1,500 vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf as of August 6.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand stated that the actions of these individuals undermined international peace and security. She characterized freedom of navigation through the strait as essential to global trade and energy security. This latest action brings the total number of sanctioned Iranian individuals to 232 and Iranian entities to 260, aligning Canada with allies seeking to counter Iranian influence in the Middle East.
