Mumbai Police Detain Tushar Gandhi and Actors in Protests
Mumbai Police detained Tushar Gandhi, actors Imran Khan and Lekha Washington, and over 100 protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Greater Mumbai Police detained Tushar Gandhi, actors Imran Khan and Lekha Washington, and more than 100 protesters on October 10 during demonstrations at August Kranti Maidan and Nana Chowk. The protests, organized under the banner Hum Bharat Ke Log, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and expressed opposition to the BJP-led government. The events were held in solidarity with a Cockroach Janata Party demonstration in New Delhi.
Police implemented strict security measures, including barricades and road closures, to prevent gatherings. Tushar Gandhi was detained in Bandra and held for eight hours across the DN Nagar and Borivali police stations before his release. Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut confronted police at the DN Nagar station to demand Gandhi's release. Thackeray characterized the government's actions as an unofficially imposed emergency.
Imran Khan, who stated he attended as a citizen to observe why people's voices were being suppressed, posted a selfie from a police van following his detention. Parallel protests occurred in Solapur, where the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a torch rally demanding the resignations of Gyanesh Kumar, Narendra Modi, and Amit Shah.
