Goldman Sachs CEO Warns Election Volatility May Hit AI Data Centers

David Solomon warns that upcoming midterm elections and local political opposition could create volatility for AI data center infrastructure projects.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon warned during a quarterly earnings call on October 13 that upcoming midterm elections could trigger political volatility regarding the development of AI data centers. Solomon noted that localized political opposition and uncertainty surrounding state and local government actions could impact the viability and returns of AI projects.

This warning comes as community resistance grows across the United States over environmental concerns and rising electricity demands. The scale of the buildout is significant; a Columbia Business School study suggests AI infrastructure will consume approximately 3.6 percent of U.S. GDP annually through 2032, totaling over $10 trillion.

Despite these risks, Solomon stated that Goldman Sachs is well-positioned to serve the sector. The firm is currently a financial partner with Nvidia in an initiative to raise more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure.
