Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Defends Debt Repurchase Strategy

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the administration's decision to double government debt repurchases following criticism from billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the Trump administration's decision to more than double the size of government debt repurchases during a Group of 20 finance ministers meeting. The intervention occurred after a period of rising bond yields, which initially dropped sharply following the move before rebounding.

Bessent's comments served as a response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed by billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller. Druckenmiller characterized the Treasury's use of liquidity tools to address solvency concerns as a "mistake."

While Bessent acknowledged Druckenmiller as a great investor, he argued that the U.S. bond market has been the best performing since President Trump took office. Bessent asserted that the market should not dictate government policy.
