Germany and US Expand Military Presence in Lithuania

Lithuania is expanding its military defenses through new agreements with the United States and Germany to deter Russian aggression. The Government of Lithuania is currently in discussions with Washington to host additional U.S. troops as the United States reviews its European military presence. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas stated the proposal is in the consideration stage, noting that while Lithuania has expressed readiness to host up to 1,500 troops, final numbers depend on NATO leadership and military planning.

Simultaneously, Germany is permanently deploying the 45th Armored Brigade, consisting of approximately 4,800 soldiers, to Lithuania by the end of 2027. This marks the first time Germany has stationed a full brigade outside its borders since World War II. The deployment shifts Berlin from a rotational model to a permanent presence. However, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius indicated that mandatory relocations may be required to fill the brigade, as some battalions face personnel shortages of up to 40%.

These developments follow calls from U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby for NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for European defense. In response, Lithuania has allocated 5.38% of its GDP to military spending this year and plans to maintain a budget of at least 5% next year.
