Equinor Scales Back Troll West Electrification to Boost Gas
Equinor is canceling a second electric compressor at the Troll C platform to avoid production cuts and increase gas deliveries to Europe.
Equinor and its partners are scaling back the Troll West Electrification project by canceling the installation of a second electric export compressor on the Troll C platform. The partnership notified Norway's Ministry of Energy that the project will be considered complete once the first electric export compressor is commissioned.
This decision reverses a 2021 development plan to prevent a potential production cut on Troll C that could have lasted up to 21 months. Equinor estimates the move will make approximately 2.3 Bcm of additional gas available to Europe in 2027 and 2028.
While the project has already reduced CO2 emissions by 330,000 metric tons per year, the scale-back means it will only achieve 75% of the original emission reduction target of 440,000 metric tons per year. Equinor stated that the decision balances emission reductions, energy deliveries, and value creation.
