Alaska Air Group Reports $147 Million Third Quarter Loss

Alaska Air Group reported a $147 million quarterly loss driven by a $1.8 billion fuel headwind caused by U.S.-Iran conflict disruptions.

Alaska Air Group reported a net loss of $147 million for the third quarter, a sharp reversal from the $73 million gain recorded during the same period last year. The company attributed the decline to a $1.8 billion fuel headwind this year, as actual fuel costs reached $3.94 per gallon compared to an anticipated $3.75. These rising prices are linked to disruptions in crude oil shipments resulting from the U.S. war with Iran.

Despite the net loss, the company saw revenue increase 14% year-over-year to $4.3 billion. This growth was driven largely by a 25% increase in premium revenue, which now represents over 36% of total revenue. To offset rising operational costs, the company is expanding its luxury offerings and launching new direct flights from Seattle to Osaka, Japan, and Papeete, Tahiti.

CEO Ben Minicucci stated that while the company is not satisfied with the quarterly result, he remains confident in the ability to increase the spread between unit revenue and unit costs excluding fuel. In a move to modernize operations, the company also appointed Amaresh Siva as its first chief information technology officer.
