Democrats Win Three of Four Iowa House Seats

Democrat Christina Bohannan unseated Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks as Democrats captured three of four Iowa congressional districts to help secure a House majority.

Democrats won three of four U.S. House of Representatives races in Iowa, a sweep that helped the party secure a majority in the House. In the 1st Congressional District, Christina Bohannan, a University of Iowa law professor and former state representative, defeated incumbent Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Unofficial results show Bohannan won with 55% of the vote, or 165,237 votes, while Miller-Meeks received 42.7%. This victory followed two previous matchups in 2022 and 2024, both of which Miller-Meeks had won.

Democratic gains extended to the 2nd District, where Lindsay James defeated Republican Joe Mitchell, and the 3rd District, where Sarah Trone Garriott unseated incumbent Zach Nunn. Republicans won only one race in the state, electing Chris McGowan. The Congressional Leadership Fund had effectively conceded the 1st District race by halting spending in mid-October.

Campaigns focused on the economic impact of Donald Trump's tariff policies and the war in Iran, which drove up diesel and fertilizer costs for Iowa's agricultural sector. While Miller-Meeks defended the Trump agenda, she recently voted to limit the president's ability to strike Iran to reduce fuel costs. Following her defeat, Miller-Meeks conceded the race, while Bohannan described the result as an emphatic rejection of corrupt party politics.
