Jamie Dimon Opposes CLARITY Act Crypto Bill

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon criticized the CLARITY Act and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, arguing the bill allows cryptocurrency firms to bypass traditional banking safeguards.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon publicly opposed the CLARITY Act, a pending cryptocurrency market structure bill, during the Reagan National Economic Forum and a subsequent Fox Business interview on May 29, 2026. Dimon argued the legislation allows cryptocurrency firms to pay interest on stablecoin deposits without the consumer protections, capital requirements, and Anti-Money Laundering compliance mandated for traditional banks. He claimed this creates unfair competition and risks financial instability through regulatory arbitrage.

Dimon specifically targeted Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, describing him as "full of shit" and alleging that Armstrong spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying for the bill. Dimon warned that a coalition including the American Bankers Association and small banks would fight the legislation to prevent a mass flight of deposits from traditional banks to crypto platforms.

Armstrong responded to the criticism by posting a "Heated Rivalry" meme and arguing that clear regulations are essential for American companies to innovate. The CLARITY Act, which passed the Senate Banking Committee in May under the oversight of Chairman Tim Scott, aims to regulate digital assets. The current version includes a compromise that limits interest payments on idle stablecoin balances while allowing certain transaction-based carve-outs.
