New Zealand Begins General Election Vote Counting Process

The Electoral Commission is managing a general election for 4 million voters, utilizing hand counts and strict verification for 700,000 special votes.

The Electoral Commission is managing a general election in New Zealand involving nearly 4 million enrolled voters. The process begins with a preliminary count on election day, followed by an official count that includes the processing of approximately 700,000 special votes from overseas and non-roll voters. Final results are expected by November 27.

To maintain integrity, the commission is scrutinizing rolls for double-voting and permitting appointed scrutineers to observe the hand-counting process. Candidates have the right to apply to a District Court judge for a recount within three working days of the official declaration.

This election cycle follows a 2023 investigation by the Controller and Auditor-General of New Zealand into staff errors. Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne attributed those mistakes to people working under pressure and noted that while the errors were too small to change results, the commission deeply regretted them. In response to those findings, the government adjusted enrolment deadlines, which concluded on October 25 this year.
