IDF Grounds Attack Drones After Two Reservists Die in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) suspended the use of all attack drones and aircraft capable of carrying explosive payloads across all combat sectors following a fatal operational malfunction in the northern Gaza Strip. Two reservists from the 7007th Battalion, Master Sergeant Nadav Kali, 24, and Master Sergeant Ofek Moalem, 23, were killed on Thursday when an Atalef first-person-view drone crashed inside their military post near Beit Hanun.

Initial reports indicate the soldiers had successfully launched one drone before a second aircraft fell within the outpost. Kali and Moalem were critically wounded after they approached and touched the downed aircraft, which then exploded. Both were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where they were pronounced dead. Several other soldiers were wounded in the blast.

A brigadier general is leading an investigation into whether the crash resulted from a technical malfunction, communication disruption, or electronic warfare. While military investigators are exploring these possibilities, the IDF currently assesses that Hamas lacks the electromagnetic capabilities required to cause such a crash.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mourned the fallen soldiers, stating that necessary lessons must be implemented to ensure the safety of IDF personnel. This incident occurs as the military continues operations in the strip, where 479 Israeli troops have died since October 2023.
