Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company Seeks Beach Expansion Amid Backlash

Director of the Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company James Green has applied for planning permission to extend the seating of the Forge oyster shack onto a beach in Whitstable, Kent. The proposal involves installing decking and a pergola on a section of the beach currently used by the Whitstable Yacht Club for boat storage.

The application has drawn over 200 opposing submissions. The Environment Agency cited concerns regarding flood defenses, while the Whitstable Beach Campaign argued the expansion would compromise public access and the unspoilt nature of the shoreline. Green, who faced a failed licensing attempt for a similar project five years ago, described the opposition as "nimbyism" and asserted that the local economy depends on tourism.

While the Whitstable Yacht Club has agreed not to object following a lease renegotiation, tensions remain high among residents regarding the company's historical growth and influence in the town.
