South Korea Launches Defense Drone Agency to Counter North Korea

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense established the Defense Drone Agency to centralize drone strategy and procurement while shifting operational duties to service branches.

The Ministry of National Defense of South Korea launched the Defense Drone Agency on Monday in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. Replacing the former Drone Operations Command, the new agency shifts the military's focus from direct mission execution to forcewide strategy, procurement, and the development of combat concepts. This restructuring follows criticism of the previous command regarding drone infiltrations into North Korea in October 2024.

Under the new organizational structure, operational duties for drone and counter-drone systems are transferred to the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps, with the Joint Chiefs of Staff managing command, control, and integration. The agency aims to standardize drones as battlefield tools, with plans to acquire more than 20,000 low-cost expendable combat drones and accelerate the K-LUCAS program for strategic strikes.

To expedite acquisition and reduce reliance on Chinese components, the government is implementing a fast-track certification process for commercial drones based on the U.S. Blue UAS program. These measures respond to North Korea's expanding uncrewed aviation capabilities, including a recent exhibition of over 30 drone types and orders from Kim Jong-un to achieve absolute superiority in the field. Vice Defense Minister Lee Doo-hee emphasized the need to transform new technologies into practical combat capabilities that can be rapidly deployed.
