China Protests After Anti-China Caskets Found Across Manila

Philippine police discovered five abandoned caskets containing anti-China messages across Manila in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026. One casket was placed outside the Chinese embassy and featured photos of President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Ambassador Jing Quan with the word "greedy".

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines described the act as a "political provocation" and filed a solemn representation with the Philippine government to bring the perpetrators to justice. Embassy spokesperson Ji Lingpeng stated that while the caskets were intended to sow hostility, they would not undermine stable ties.

The Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs responded by stating that such actions do not reflect the government's approach to foreign relations or the way Filipinos express political dissatisfaction. The incident occurs as Manila and Beijing continue to face tensions over disputed maritime features in the South China Sea.
