US Commerce Department Lifts Aluminum Duties for 16 Nations

The United States Department of Commerce partially lifted antidumping and countervailing duties on specific aluminum can stock imported from 16 countries, effective September 24. The exemption specifically targets aluminum stock used to manufacture beverage cans, lids, and tabs, though broader trade-remedy orders for common alloy aluminum sheet remain active.

This decision follows changed-circumstances reviews triggered after members of the U.S. aluminum industry sought clarification. These industry members asserted that can stock was always intended to be outside the scope of the existing duties. The relief applies retroactively to qualifying entries that have not yet been finally assessed by customs authorities.

The affected nations receiving the duty lift include India, Bahrain, Brazil, Croatia, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Oman, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, and Türkiye. Separate trade actions continue to apply to aluminum sheet imported from China. The United States Customs and Border Protection has been instructed to end the suspension for eligible shipments and process them without the affected duties.
