Anti-Asylum Protests Erupt Over RAF Barnham Housing Plan

Anti-asylum protests engulfed Thetford, Norfolk, throughout the summer of 2026, culminating in a march from the town market square to RAF Barnham. The unrest centers on a plan by the Government of the United Kingdom to house approximately 1,250 asylum seekers at the former military base, a move intended to replace asylum hotels with sites like MDP Wethersfield and Crowborough training camp.

Violence escalated in early August after leaked addresses of houses in multiple occupation led to vigilante attacks on properties in Thetford. These incidents resulted in more than 20 arrests for offenses including conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and racially aggravated public order.

The situation reflects a political shift in East Anglia, where Reform UK and Restore Britain have gained significant local power. While Labour MP Terry Jermy opposes the use of RAF Barnham, he cites the base's poor condition and high refurbishment costs rather than the protesters' concerns over safety and border control. Jermy has avoided the demonstrations to distance himself from racist rhetoric.
