President Tharman Shanmugaratnam Visits Malaysia to Strengthen Economic Ties

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam conducted a four-day state visit to Malaysia to advance economic integration and reinforce bilateral social and diplomatic kinship.

Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam conducted a four-day state visit to Malaysia starting July 13, 2026, following an invitation from King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar. During the visit, the President met with the King at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur and held talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reinforce diplomatic and economic bonds.

The leaders focused on growing economic complementarity through major infrastructure projects, specifically the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. President Tharman emphasized that the relationship between the two nations is built on a deep foundation of social affinity and kinship rather than purely transactional interests, describing the partnership as a rarity in a divided world.

Beyond economic ties, the visit addressed regional stability. President Tharman highlighted the importance of collaboration within ASEAN, linking Malaysia's 2025 chairmanship to Singapore's own upcoming chairmanship in 2027. To further strengthen people-to-people ties, the President hosted a reception for Singaporeans living and working in Malaysia, noting their role in maintaining friendly relations between the two states.
