China Defies U.S. Sanctions Over Iranian Economic Ties

The Government of China responded with defiance after the United States sanctioned dozens of Chinese entities and threatened a major financial institution over its dealings with Iran. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the relationship between China and Iran "should not be disrupted or undermined," warning that Beijing will take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

These sanctions are part of an economic onslaught led by Donald Trump to pressure Iran into a deal. While China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil, both superpowers are attempting to maintain a trade truce before a leaders' summit scheduled for September 24 in Washington.

To prevent ties from spiraling, the U.S. reportedly plans to limit pending overcapacity tariffs on China to levels previously approved by Beijing. Meanwhile, China continues to leverage its dominance in the rare earths supply chain to constrain the impact of U.S. sanctions. U.S. official Scott Bessent indicated a desire to avoid destabilizing the global financial system during this period of escalation.
