Azawad Liberation Front Ambushes Russian and Malian Convoy

The Azawad Liberation Front and JNIM jihadists attacked a military convoy of 300 Russian and Malian troops near Tabankort in northern Mali on Thursday.

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM jihadists ambushed a military reinforcement convoy near Tabankort in northern Mali on Thursday morning. The convoy, which included air cover and dozens of vehicles, was transporting over 200 Russian Africa Corps fighters and more than 100 Malian soldiers toward the strategic town of Anefis. This attack followed a similar ambush of a reinforcement convoy from Gao the previous Sunday.

The escalation follows a period of intense fighting. The Malian Armed Forces reported that they neutralized approximately 100 militants in the Anefis and Tabrichat areas on Wednesday, July 8, utilizing 13 airstrikes. This followed operations on Monday in the Kidal region where the military claimed to have killed over 200 terrorists. These government offensives were responses to attacks on July 4 targeting Gao, Sevare, Kenioroba, Aguelhok, and Anefis.

The FLA currently claims control of Anefis to secure its influence over Kidal, which separatists captured in April. However, Russian paramilitaries and Malian soldiers continue to hold a military camp within Anefis. The current violence is part of a broader pattern of coordination between the FLA and JNIM, who previously launched a major offensive in April and targeted the capital, Bamako.
