Oxfordshire Council Seeks £48,000 in Legal Costs from Ryan Bridge

Oxfordshire County Council has applied to the High Court to recover nearly £49,000 in legal fees from Ryan Bridge and other flag campaigners.

The Oxfordshire County Council has applied to the High Court to recover £48,849.98 in legal costs incurred while obtaining an injunction against individuals involved in the Raise the Colours campaign. The campaign encouraged the illegal placement of Union Jack and St George’s flags on public highway infrastructure, which the council argued created safety risks, trespass, and highway obstructions.

Ryan Bridge, leader of Raise the Colours, initially reported receiving a bill for the costs. However, the council later clarified that the court has not yet determined the application and no sum is currently due or payable. The High Court will initially consider the application on papers to decide if costs should be awarded and how liability will be divided among the defendants, who include Bridge, Ben Cullen, Trudy Wells, and Kevin Good.

Bridge and the other defendants previously provided a formal undertaking to the court to stop raising flags or encouraging others to do so. In a separate legal matter, Bridge faces a High Court hearing on November 2 regarding a similar injunction sought by Birmingham City Council.
