IBM Executive Warns AI Reliance Causes Employee Skill Erosion
Aparna Nair of IBM warns that over-reliance on AI is causing cognitive surrender and eroding critical thinking skills among employees.
Aparna Nair, IBM's chief talent, leadership and culture officer, warns that employees are experiencing skill erosion, specifically in critical thinking, due to an over-reliance on artificial intelligence. This trend, which University of Pennsylvania researchers call cognitive surrender, occurs when workers uncritically accept AI-generated answers rather than applying their own reasoning.
Nair argues that managers must pivot from directing work to coaching for impact. She suggests that personalized learning and stretch assignments are necessary to help employees retain essential skills. This shift toward human coaching comes as several major technology firms, including Meta, Google, and Amazon, have reduced middle management to eliminate organizational bloat.
Further industry shifts are expected as Apple Inc. CEO John Ternus reportedly considers similar management cuts to accelerate product development. The warnings follow an IBM survey of 1,500 chief human resources officers and 8,800 employees regarding the impact of AI on professional skills.
