NHTSA Probes Tesla Robotaxis for Speeding in School Zones
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether Tesla robotaxis exceed speed limits in active school zones across Texas.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a defect petition inquiry on October 9, 2026, to determine if Tesla Inc. robotaxis exceed posted speed limits in active school zones. The probe focuses on approximately 1,000 vehicles from the 2026 model year, specifically the Model Y and Cybercab, while operating with the Automated Driving System engaged.
The inquiry follows a September 23 petition supported by social media reports and video evidence. While no crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been recorded, the action increases federal pressure on the company. The agency is simultaneously investigating Tesla's self-certification of safety standards for the Cybercab.
Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in September before expanding operations to Dallas and Houston. Despite the expansion, the service has faced criticism for various operational issues. Elon Musk has noted that the Cybercab is unlikely to generate material revenue before 2027.
