New South Wales Police Seize Illegal E-Bikes Amid Regulation Calls
New South Wales authorities are seizing illegal e-bikes as residents and officials debate whether to implement licensing or school-based education to curb reckless riding.
The Government of New South Wales implemented new laws on August 21 granting police expanded powers to seize and crush illegal e-bikes that function as electric motorbikes. During an initial enforcement blitz in Sydney's northern beaches, police seized 36 illegal e-bikes, including one capable of speeds exceeding 90kmh, and issued 16 penalty notices and 46 cautions.
Despite these enforcement measures, residents and local officials continue to report reckless riding and intimidation on public paths. In Woonona, residents have advocated for licensing requirements similar to those adopted by the Queensland Government on August 31, which mandate that riders be at least 16 years old and hold a driver's license or learner permit.
Wollongong City councillor Andrew Anthony noted high volumes of complaints regarding e-bike use at the Blue Mile, Harry Graham Park, and the Princes Highway path. While Anthony agreed that safety must improve, he argued that licensing might be excessive and instead proposed implementing road rule education courses in schools.
