Port Unions Extend Deadline to Avert Maritime Watchmen Strike
The Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 extended contract talks to November 20 to prevent a strike by 250 maritime watchmen.
The Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 extended their contract bargaining deadline to November 20, preventing an immediate strike by approximately 250 maritime watchmen. These workers are responsible for terminal security, gate entry inspections, and the tracking of critical cargo at the seaports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
A walkout would have significantly disrupted operations, as the Pacific Maritime Association noted that the affected workers manage terminals handling roughly 85% of cargo at Long Beach and 33% at Los Angeles. The agreement to continue talks comes during a period of high activity, with both ports reporting record cargo volumes in September.
Shipments currently moving through these terminals include auto parts, retail goods for the holiday season, and equipment for AI data centers. The extension provides a window for the employer group and the union to reach a final agreement without halting the flow of these essential goods.
