AI Coding Tools Trigger Workplace Paralysis Among Software Engineers
Software engineers report widespread anxiety and job insecurity as the rapid acceleration of AI model releases creates pressure to constantly master new tools.
The proliferation of AI coding tools has triggered widespread anxiety and workplace paralysis among software engineers. Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, the frequency of major model releases from companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic accelerated from 18 in 2023 to 69 in 2025. This rapid pace has left developers feeling a loss of professional agency and constant pressure to avoid obsolescence.
Industry data highlights the severity of these concerns, with a Devographics survey finding that over 40% of developers view AI tools as a threat to their employment. While some engineers believe AI allows them to focus more on product requirements, others describe the new reality of managing automated tools as botsitting.
Corporate environments are further intensifying this stress. Some employers have begun using dashboards to track AI token consumption and are integrating AI adoption metrics into formal performance reviews. In response to these trends, Jack Boudreau, CEO of The Emperor's New Clothes, suggested that becoming a subject matter expert may now be futile due to the pace of AI simplification. Meanwhile, Kathy Gersch, CEO of TSV Kottern, has advised companies to prioritize knowledge sharing to mitigate worker anxiety.
