Brett Lindstrom Seeks Alternative Ballot Access After Petition Fraud

Nonpartisan gubernatorial candidate Brett Lindstrom failed to qualify for the 2026 Nebraska general election ballot after state officials invalidated more than 2,000 of his petition signatures. The Nebraska Secretary of State's office reported that only 3,358 of the 5,765 submitted signatures were valid, falling short of the 4,000-signature requirement. The invalidations were linked to three individuals arrested in August for circulator fraud.

Lindstrom attributed the fraud to a professional firm contracted to collect signatures and stated he was unaware of the activity. Following the disqualification, Lindstrom initially held a news conference in Omaha to evaluate his political career, citing the extreme nature of current political parties. However, he later announced he would continue his campaign by seeking a "pirate ship" for ballot access, exploring options with alternative groups such as the Coming People Party.

Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mary Jane Truemper criticized the effort as a "complete embarrassment," while Democratic candidate Lynne Walz called for transparency regarding the firms involved. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska Attorney General's office are currently conducting a criminal investigation into the fraudulent signatures. Lindstrom maintains that his message of moving beyond political extremes remains relevant and intends to continue criticizing Republican nominee Jim Pillen.
