New Economics Foundation Proposes Universal Public Energy Provision
The New Economics Foundation is urging the UK government to implement a universal public provision for essential energy to ensure all households can afford warmth.
The New Economics Foundation is proposing a universal public provision for energy to ensure all households in the United Kingdom can afford essential electricity and warmth. The organization advocates for the Treasury to fund a true price cap on an essential block of energy, rather than relying on targeted social tariffs or income-based systems.
Alex Chapman, the organization's head of economic and environmental policy, argues that targeted systems are arbitrary. To fund this universal offer, Chapman suggests implementing higher charges for households with very high energy consumption. He also points to the Australian solar sharer scheme as a potential model, which provides free midday electricity to leverage renewable energy for national security.
These proposals come as Secretary of State for Energy Miatta Fahnbulleh considers various energy bill tariff options for the country.
