Vale SA Shelves Base Metals IPO Amid Brazilian Government Opposition

Vale SA has indefinitely postponed the initial public offering of its critical-minerals subsidiary, Vale Base Metals Ltd., following opposition from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Mining giant Vale SA has shelved plans for an initial public offering of its critical-minerals subsidiary, Vale Base Metals Ltd. The decision follows political opposition from the Brazilian government, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who seeks to ensure Brazil retains control of strategic copper assets to maintain the country's status as a global resources powerhouse.

Vale Base Metals was carved out in 2023 to separate the company's copper, nickel, and cobalt operations from its core iron-ore business, a move intended to boost overall valuation. The subsidiary manages a global portfolio with operations in Canada, Brazil, Japan, Britain, and Indonesia. While Chief Financial Officer Marcelo Bacci had previously indicated the IPO could occur in 2026, the transaction is now on hold indefinitely despite favorable commodity prices for copper.

Vale SA and Vale Base Metals declined to comment directly on the postponement. The subsidiary stated that its current priorities have shifted toward accelerating organic growth in copper and improving operational efficiency in its nickel business. The subsidiary is partially owned by the Saudi Arabian Manara Minerals Investment Company, which holds a 10 percent stake.
