India Plans 130 Billion Rupee Battery Component Incentive

The Government of India is designing a 130 billion rupee incentive program to boost domestic production of advanced battery cell components and reduce reliance on China.

The Government of India is preparing a new incentive program worth up to 130 billion rupees ($1.37 billion) to stimulate the domestic production of advanced battery cell components. The initiative targets five critical materials: anode and cathode active materials, electrolytes, separator film, and copper foil.

This program aims to improve energy security and reduce strategic dependency on Chinese suppliers by closing the cost gap with cheaper imports. The proposal is currently undergoing inter-ministerial consultations before it moves to the Expenditure Finance Committee of the finance ministry for final approval.

The move follows production struggles among recipients of a previous 50-gigawatt-hour cell manufacturing incentive program. Companies including Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. and the renewable energy unit of Mukesh Ambani have failed to meet production milestones, citing a lack of skilled manpower and a shortage of upstream components.
