Alaska Signs DOJ Agreement to Identify Ineligible Voters

The state of Alaska entered into a confidential memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Justice on December 19, 2025. The agreement allows the federal agency to identify individuals for potential removal from state voter rolls by notifying the state of list maintenance issues.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Alaska Division of Elections must move identified ineligible voters to an inactive list within 45 days. Voters on this list are required to verify their identity to cast a ballot and face permanent removal over a four-year period. Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom stated the agreement was entered at the request of the Department of Justice and in accordance with state law.

The move has faced criticism from lawmakers and former state officials who argue the deal threatens voter privacy and undermines states' rights. While the Department of Justice has sought similar data from other states to identify noncitizens, several states have refused these requests and successfully challenged them in court.
