Liberia Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Liberia called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday.

The Government of Liberia called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians in the Russia-Ukraine conflict during the 10,237th meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday.

Prutus Sackie, Liberia's Political Coordinator to the Security Council, urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure unhindered humanitarian access to schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. Sackie argued that the priority to end human suffering and protect innocent lives should take precedence over reaching a total agreement on all disputed issues between the warring parties.

Liberia advocated for a just and lasting peace settlement consistent with the United Nations Charter, emphasizing national sovereignty and territorial integrity. This appeal follows a September 23 warning from UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, who stated that the conflict is entering a "dangerous new phase" marked by increased human costs and escalation risks.
