AWS CEO Warns Data Center Opposition Risks AI Race

Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman urges greater transparency on data center benefits to counter public opposition and prevent the U.S. from losing the AI race.

Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman is calling for the company to be more transparent and vocal about the benefits of data centers to counter growing public and political opposition. Speaking on the A16z Show podcast, Garman argued that consumers often overlook how essential data centers are for daily services, citing the reliance of Netflix on AWS cloud infrastructure as a primary example.

Garman warned that data center moratoriums could stifle critical infrastructure buildout and cause the United States to lose the global AI race. He compared the scale of the current expansion to the creation of the Interstate Highway System and highlighted the positive impact these facilities have on local tax bases.

This push for better communication follows polling, including a recent Fox News survey, showing that 71% of registered voters oppose the construction of AI data centers in their communities.
