EU Regulators Vote on Tesla Full Self-Driving Approval

European Union regulators are voting on whether to permit Tesla's Full Self-Driving system, which would make Tesla the first carmaker to offer hands-free driving in Europe.

Regulators from 27 European Union member states are preparing to vote on the approval of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. To secure the authorization, the company needs support from 55% of member states representing 65% of the total EU population. While the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Belgium, and Denmark have already granted national approvals, traffic-safety researchers have challenged Tesla's crash-reduction claims, stating the provided data sample is too small for accurate comparisons.

Internal emails reveal Tesla pressured the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) to accelerate the review process, labeling the approval as "mission critical." Simultaneously, the company disputed a €365,000 invoice for the review.

Elon Musk has intensified the push for approval, claiming on X that delays in France "will result in deaths." This statement prompted Tesla owners to lobby transport ministries in France, Sweden, and Norway. If the EU vote succeeds, Tesla will become the first automotive manufacturer permitted to offer hands-free driving on European roads.
