King Haakon VIII Ascends Throne After Death of King Harald V

King Harald V of Norway died at 6:35 a.m. on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. The monarch passed away at a national hospital in Oslo after receiving treatment for a bacterial blood infection and haemolytic anaemia. His 35-year reign, which began in 1991, was defined by the modernization of the monarchy, the championing of LGBTQ+ rights and religious tolerance, and his role as a symbol of national unity following the 2011 extremist attacks.

King Haakon VIII, the 53-year-old son of the late monarch, automatically ascended to the throne. He is succeeded in line by his eldest daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
