Philippines Ambassador Cites Indian Defense Ties as Deterrent Against China

Philippines Ambassador to India Josel F. Ignacio asserted on July 21, 2026, that the acquisition of the Indian-made BrahMos missile system provides the Philippines with credible deterrence against China's increasing presence in the South China Sea. Speaking in New Delhi, Ignacio explained that the supersonic cruise missiles enhance anti-access and area denial capabilities, raising operational costs for potential aggressors. The Philippines signed a USD 375 million deal for three shore-based batteries in January 2022, with the first delivery occurring in 2024.

During a roundtable discussion at the Ananta Centre, Ignacio further highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian Navy's increasing presence and joint maneuvers with the Philippine Navy. He described these actions as an important signal regarding rights guaranteed under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He noted that India is now a top potential provider for future defense acquisitions due to its reliable indigenous industry.

Ignacio also addressed the tenth anniversary of the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling, maintaining that the award is final and binding for both the Philippines and China. He argued that China's continued rejection of the ruling demonstrates an unwillingness to be a responsible actor. While emphasizing the need for a rules-based maritime order supported by the Quad and ASEAN, Ignacio stated that the Philippines remains a peace-loving nation focused on national security.
