Jeffrey Soros Hosts Fundraiser for Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed
Jeffrey Soros hosted a California fundraiser for Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, sparking GOP accusations of hypocrisy over El-Sayed's campaign against billionaire influence in politics.
Hollywood producer Jeffrey Soros hosted a closed-door fundraiser at his California home for Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. During the event, Soros detailed long-term ties between his family and El-Sayed, revealing that he interviewed the candidate in 2012 for the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, which subsequently funded El-Sayed's graduate education.
The event allowed donations of up to $57,800 to the Abdul for Michigan Victory Fund. Financial records show the Soros family and aligned groups have contributed roughly $103 million this cycle, including a $9 million disbursement from Democracy PAC to Senate Majority PAC, which pledged $30 million to support El-Sayed.
Republican nominee Mike Rogers and his campaign characterized El-Sayed as a "conman," arguing that accepting support from wealthy donors contradicts his platform to remove money from politics. Rogers further claimed the funding suggests El-Sayed will advance a Soros-led agenda, including allowing non-citizens to vote. The El-Sayed campaign defended its position by accusing corporate special interests of using dark money to support Rogers. Recent polling shows Rogers leading El-Sayed 44.4 percent to 43.1 percent.
