U.S. Utility Companies Expand Infrastructure to Meet AI Power Demands

Major U.S. electric utilities are investing billions in nuclear, gas, and renewable energy to power surging electricity needs from AI data centers.

U.S. utility companies are aggressively expanding power generation and infrastructure to accommodate the high electricity requirements of AI data centers. These facilities demand significantly more power than traditional data centers due to specialized chips and intensive cooling needs.

NextEra Energy has formed a strategic partnership with Google to develop nuclear energy and data center campuses. The company is also developing up to 6.2 GW of renewable energy and storage for Entergy. Meanwhile, Dominion Energy is committing $50 billion in investments between 2025 and 2029, with a primary focus on its Virginia operations to support one of the largest data center markets globally, including the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project.

In Northeast Louisiana, Entergy is constructing two new gas-fired power plants with a combined 1.5 GW capacity. These plants are designed to power a $10 billion AI data center being built by Meta Platforms Inc., with fuel supplies secured from Energy Transfer. Utilities expect these industrial demands to drive significant earnings growth over the coming years.
