Russia Builds Jet-Powered Drone Base in Six Weeks
Russia nearly completed a major jet-powered drone launch base in the Rostov region, capable of firing 100 drones daily against Ukraine.
The Federal Government of Russia has nearly completed a major jet-powered drone launch base in the Rostov region within six weeks. Satellite imagery analysis shows the facility grew from an empty field on August 31 to a complex spanning approximately 0.9 square kilometers by mid-October. The site is designed to launch Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones and features eight launch platforms with a potential capacity to fire 100 drones every 24 hours.
Located 3.5 kilometers from the Millerovo air base, the facility likely operates within existing air defense protections, which complicates Ukrainian efforts to target the site. Russia has increased its use of jet-powered drones six-fold over the last three months. These weapons travel at speeds up to 600km/h, making them significantly harder for Ukraine and NATO to intercept than previous models.
Defense experts suggest the rapid construction indicates a strategic shift toward deep-strike capabilities over conventional land forces. Mike Monnik of DroneSec noted that the speed of construction demonstrates how quickly Russia can bring offensive capabilities to bear, creating a strategic vulnerability for NATO countries.
