UK Pensions Regulator Warns of Hidden AI Risks
The Pensions Regulator urged UK pension fund trustees to stress-test portfolios for hidden exposure to artificial intelligence risks amid surging global corporate investment.
The Pensions Regulator of the United Kingdom warned pension fund trustees on October 22 that their portfolios may contain significant hidden exposure to artificial intelligence risks. The regulator stated that because AI is increasingly embedded across various sectors, portfolios that appear diversified may still be vulnerable to a market downturn.
Ben Gunnee, the regulator's executive director of market oversight, urged trustees to stress-test their portfolios under severe market conditions and challenge investment advisers to identify both direct and indirect AI-related exposures. This warning follows a July report from the Bank of England, which noted that a lack of transparency in AI funding could lead to a broad market impact if highly valued AI stocks experience a selloff.
The urgency of the warning comes as global corporate investment in AI more than doubled in 2025, according to data from Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
