Airbnb Challenges Dorset Bed and Breakfast Over Business Name

Airbnb has launched a legal challenge against bnb-side, a six-room bed and breakfast located on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, to prevent the social enterprise from registering its name. The booking company argues that the use of bnb threatens its global brand, claiming consumers may confuse the two entities or that the guesthouse could profit by misrepresenting itself as an official Airbnb service.

Managed by the b-side arts festival, the guesthouse generates nearly half of the festival's annual £250,000 turnover. The social enterprise maintains that bnb is a universally recognized descriptive shorthand for bed and breakfast. Director Rocca Holly-Nambi stated that the business is not willing to back down, while Chair Raina Summerson noted the establishment was created to reduce dependence on public funding.

bnb-side has asked the Intellectual Property Office to reject Airbnb's opposition and award costs in its favor. The case remains ongoing with no ruling yet issued.
