United Nations Report Confirms 1.5 Degree Climate Goal Failure

The United Nations released a report on Wednesday confirming that global efforts have failed to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. Current policies project a temperature rise of 2.6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, and the report warns that the 1.5 degree threshold will likely be breached within the next few years.

As a fallback, the organization proposed a strategy to limit the temperature overshoot and eventually reverse warming through massive carbon dioxide removal efforts. These measures include large-scale reforestation and unproven carbon-capture technologies. The United Nations described this approach as the best remaining option, while acknowledging the path is highly uncertain and that certain damages, such as rising sea levels, are irreversible.

The feasibility of this strategy is challenged by the continued use of fossil fuels and the withdrawal of the United States from global climate efforts under the Trump administration. Climate Analytics, a Berlin-based science institute, criticized the report for failing to explicitly demand a fossil fuel phase-out and warned that the findings could risk a call to apathy.
