Jaguar Land Rover Launches Military Division for Nato Sales
Jaguar Land Rover established a dedicated defense division to sell Defender Wolf Series II vehicles to Nato countries and bid for a UK government contract.
Jaguar Land Rover established a dedicated Defender defense division to sell the Defender Wolf Series II, a revamped military vehicle, to Nato countries. The company is currently bidding for a £900 million UK Ministry of Defence contract to replace an aging Land Rover fleet, facing competition from General Motors and Ineos.
This strategic pivot follows a period of high costs, weak demand, and the aftermath of a cyber-attack. The company clarified that the defense expansion is separate from a broader plan to cut 4,000 global jobs to save £1.7 billion. Additionally, the automaker is pursuing a joint venture with Stellantis to produce a local version of the Defender for the United States pickup truck market.
Other European automakers are similarly diversifying into defense. Volkswagen is converting a factory in Osnabrück to produce heavy-duty trucks and components for air defense systems, while Renault is repurposing a plant in Le Mans to manufacture drones for the French ministry of defence.
