Nigeria Deploys Thousands of Security Personnel for Osun Election

Nigerian security forces have launched a massive mobilization effort to secure the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) initiated the buildup on August 10, deploying 10,210 personnel, including SWAT, K9, and Special Intelligence units, across 30 Local Government Areas. This force includes 1,000 officers drawn from ten different state commands to reinforce local operations.

Security intensified on August 11 as the military took primary control of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) state headquarters in Osogbo. The military deployment includes soldiers and three Armoured Personnel Carriers, supplementing the existing presence of the NSCDC and anti-riot mobile police.

Simultaneously, the Police Service Commission deployed a monitoring delegation led by DIG Taiwo Lakanu (retd.) to oversee 15,000 police officers assigned to the polls. The commission stated it would sanction any officer found compromising the credibility of the election to ensure the process remains impartial and civil. As 14 political parties prepare to contest the election, NSCDC leadership warned that criminal elements and political thugs attempting to disrupt the peace would face legal consequences under the Electoral Act.
