Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn defended his healthcare and education platforms during an appearance at the Hancock County Fair in Britt, Iowa, on August 1, 2026. Lahn advocated for the continuation of Governor Kim Reynolds' privatized Medicaid system, arguing that the private sector should deliver care under government oversight. As part of this platform, he pledged to ban the use of artificial intelligence in coverage denials.

On education, Lahn proposed expanding the Education Savings Account program to increase competition between public and private schools. He also expressed a goal to increase the use of locally sourced food in public schools, citing discussions with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins.

Lahn simultaneously defended a campaign attack ad targeting Democratic candidate and state auditor Rob Sand. The advertisement alleges that Sand failed to act regarding a 2024 computer error that led to the misallocation of $53 million in court debt payments. Lahn maintained that Sand failed to exercise his statutory authority to intervene.

Sand characterized the advertisement as "fundamentally dishonest," arguing that the error was not detectable via audit and that his office lacked the specialized staff to investigate the computer glitch. Sand's campaign further asserted that the judicial branch took full responsibility for the error.
