AI Remediation Increases Workloads for White-Collar Professionals

The rise of large language models has created a new labor demand for AI remediation, where humans are hired to correct hallucinations, errors, and judgment gaps in machine-generated outputs. While some firms employ experienced professionals for quality control, many workers in finance, tech, and retail report that monitoring this workslop increases their overall workload.

The Government of the United Kingdom is currently experimenting with AI to summarize citizen feedback and draft correspondence. Official guidance for these public sector tools warns that outputs must be independently verified to prevent systemic failures similar to the Dutch tax authority fraud scandal, where algorithms wrongly accused thousands of parents of fraud.

This shift has already impacted translation services through the creation of post-editing roles, which are often lower-paid and viewed as a form of deskilling. In response to these pressures, the Writers Guild of America secured an agreement in 2023 to prevent studios from using AI to generate first drafts that humans would then polish for lower pay, establishing guardrails to protect human recognition and compensation.
