US Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir
US Ambassador Sergio Gor conducted a historic visit to Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, affirming the region is an important part of India.
United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor conducted a high-profile diplomatic tour of Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley from August 20 to 21, 2026. This marked the first visit by a top US envoy to the strategic frontier region since the 2020 Galwan clashes and the first interaction between a serving US ambassador and a sitting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister in over 15 years.
In Srinagar, Gor met with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and described Jammu and Kashmir as "an important part of India." This statement prompted the Government of Pakistan to summon the US embassy's charge d'affaires in Islamabad to lodge a strong demarche. Gor also indicated that the United States is considering a review of its security advisory for the region. The visit follows recent counter-terrorism discussions between Gor and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Gor's itinerary in Ladakh included visiting the Thiksey Monastery and the Sangam Confluence at Nimmu, as well as river rafting from Tsogti. While reports initially suggested a meeting with the Dalai Lama in Leh, Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration clarified that a last-minute program change prevented the meeting. Tsering denied that the cancellation resulted from US concerns regarding China, though the Government of China closely monitored the diplomat's presence in the border region.
