Malaysia Begins Repatriating 5,000 Myanmar Nationals
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched a repatriation program on September 29 to return 5,000 Myanmar nationals to their home country via naval transport.
The government of Malaysia began the first phase of a repatriation program on September 29, transporting approximately 1,500 Myanmar nationals from detention centers to the Majlis Perbandaran Manjung stadium near the Lumut naval base. These individuals are part of a larger group of 5,000 migrants whom Malaysia claims have agreed to voluntary repatriation. The migrants are currently being processed for transport to Myanmar by ship.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the initiative in July after the government of Myanmar pledged that returns for its citizens would be "safe and dignified." The policy shift follows the detention of over 100 Rohingya refugees in Kuala Lumpur who had been protesting potential evictions from a settlement in Penang. To expedite the repatriation process, Anwar Ibrahim intends to invite Myanmar's president, Min Aung Hlaing, for an official visit.
Human rights groups have expressed concern regarding the safety of the returns. Observers suggest the move is driven by public fatigue and domestic political expediency.
