Economists Forecast Persistent Global Inflation Through 2027

A Reuters poll of over 500 economists warns that rising energy costs from Middle East conflict will keep global inflation high into next year.

A Reuters poll of more than 500 economists indicates that high global inflation will persist well into 2027. Price pressures are becoming entrenched as crude oil prices exceed $117 per barrel, driven by the US-Israeli war with Iran. Consequently, economists raised 2027 inflation forecasts for 31 of 50 polled economies, including 15 of 21 developed nations.

Reuters reports that while inflation remains a threat, global growth is showing resilience. This stability is supported by more than $1 trillion in artificial intelligence investments. Global growth forecasts for this year and next were upgraded to 3.0% and 3.2% respectively, though these figures still trail the International Monetary Fund's 3.4% prediction for 2027.

Financial leaders highlight the volatility of the current environment. HSBC Global Chief Economist Janet Henry warned that escalating Middle East tensions increase the likelihood of persistent inflation. Morgan Stanley Global Chief Economist Seth Carpenter noted that the inflation picture has grown more complex as energy costs begin to pass through into core measures.

These cost-of-living pressures are now influencing global political outcomes, specifically impacting the recent presidential election in Brazil and the upcoming midterm elections in the United States.
