Alberta Commissions Economic Study Ahead of October Secession Referendum

The Government of Alberta has commissioned an independent economic analysis to determine the costs and risks associated with the province potentially leaving Canada. The study, conducted by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy and supported by an advisory panel led by economist Jack Mintz, is expected to be released in late summer to provide voters with objective data before a non-binding referendum on October 19, 2026.

Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party initiated the vote, which Smith described as a pressure release valve for secessionist sentiments. The referendum will feature 10 questions, including whether the provincial government should begin the formal legal process under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding vote on separation.

Critics argue the government lacks a mandate for the campaign and that the movement lacks a coherent policy plan. In response, opponents have begun organizing campaigns to encourage Albertans to remain in Canada. The provincial government maintains that the study is necessary to ensure citizens have credible information regarding transition costs and potential savings before casting their ballots.
