India Supreme Court to Hear West Bengal Voter Pleas

The Supreme Court of India will hear pleas on October 16 from West Bengal voters seeking restoration to electoral rolls before November civic polls.

The Supreme Court of India will hear pleas on October 16 from voters in West Bengal whose names were removed from the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision process. The petitioners are seeking the early disposal of their appeals or permission to vote in state civic polls scheduled for November.

Chief Justice Surya Kant stated the court intends to prioritize appeals seeking the inclusion of names over those seeking deletion to resolve the existing backlog. Justice Joymalya Bagchi added that the court is currently addressing software issues affecting the revision process.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioners, argued for expedited disposal after noting that 93 percent of appeals pending with tribunals have been allowed. He highlighted that the affected voters were already barred from participating in recent by-polls.
